The best way to check a transfer case is to have your repair shop drain the fluid. Then check for the following:

• Is there any fluid?
• Does the fluid smell burnt?
• Is the fluid silvery in color?
• Are there metal pieces in the fluid?

95% of the time if there is little-to-no fluid or if it smells burn or if it is silvery in color, then the transfer case needs to be replaced. Metal pieces in the fluid also indicate extreme wear and are most likely an indication that the transfer case needs to be replaced.
